Character: Gabriel Agreste/Betterfly (with Kwami Nooroo)
Canon: Miraculous Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir (Miraculous World: Paris special)- a couple weeks before he makes his jump to the main Miraculous universe
Age: Gabriel- late 30s-early 40s, Nooroo- at least 700,000 years old, possibly older
Background Information: Gabriel Agreste/Betterfly on the Miraculous Wiki
Nooroo on the Miraculous wiki
As most information on Nooroo is from the main Miraculous universe, a bit of extra background on this iteration of Nooroo and the world he comes from is needed. The world this version Gabriel and Nooroo are from is ruled by an evil being known only as the Supreme. Under the Supreme's rule, altruism and any form of mutual aid is a crime. It is essentially a mirror universe to that of the main Miraculous storyline, one where goodness is seen as the deviation from the norm. And while saying that evil is the norm for the average person there is likely too strong a term, evil is definitely in control and people are compelled to submit to the status quo out of fear of the Supreme.
Very little is currently known about the Supreme, but what we do know is as follows. The Supreme is male; he's always referred to using male pronouns, and the one time he's been heard to speak, it's in a deep, booming masculine voice. He's ruled that version of Earth for at least several generations, most likely longer, long enough that most people of that world can't conceive of any other way to live besides living in fear under the Supreme's rule. He controls all known Miraculous in his world, and uses them to perpetuate his own power, either directly or by entrusting them to powerful people who've sworn loyalty to him. Unlike the main Miraculous universe, the general public in his world is completely unaware of the existence of the Miraculous.
The Supreme also seems to have a level of control over the Kwamis that no other Miraculous holder has shown, even when their Miraculous aren't in his direct possession. Kwamis who are under his control have a magical seal placed over their mouths that not only prevents them from speaking but can also be used to enforce his will on them, even when not in the same universe. When Shadybug attempted to merge the sealed incarnations of Tikki and Plagg into Gimmi to make a wish, it instead resulted in larger versions of the seal appearing around them while the kwamis reacted badly, struggling and clutching their heads in pain, and the Supreme's voice echoed around them saying- "ONLY THE SUPREME DEFINES REALITY. REALITY IS THE SUPREME." Whether the message was the Supreme speaking directly, or merely part of a magical 'security system' of sorts meant to prevent anyone from making a wish is unclear, but the fact that the seal could still affect the kwamis even outside his own universe says a lot about his power and why he's so feared.
The Nooroo of that world is shown to not have the seal, however, so it clearly can be removed. Whether this happens automatically when a Miraculous holder in that world resolves to use their powers for the grater good and defy the Supreme, or whether some other technique is used is currently unknown. What is known is that Nooroo, like his fellow kwamis, was enslaved by the Supreme for some time until his Miraculous was given to Gabriel, who then also stole the Peacock Miraculous in order to achieve his dream. When his misuse use of the two Miraculous resulted in the death of his wife, however, Gabriel resolved to redeem himself by using the Butterfly Miraculous for the greater good, transforming into the superhero Betterfly and freeing Nooroo from the Supreme's control.
As nearly all of of his screentime in the special was spent as Betterfly, there's very little canon information about Gabriel and Nooroo's relationship. However he's clearly shown to care about the kwami and treat him kindly, and the warm feelings seem to be mutual. Given what we've seen of other long-term Miraculous holders and their kwamis as well as what we know about Gabriel's nature, it's likely he treats Nooroo as a friend and partner in his efforts to overthrow the Supreme.
Nooroo, like all kwamis, exists across all the billions of parallel universes simultaneously, so he's at least somewhat aware that in other universes the holder of his Miraculous uses it for evil. However, as there's simply not enough time in a human lifetime to talk about even the tiniest bit of his experiences across other universes, he opted to keep knowledge of them to himself and just enjoy his time with Gabriel. After all, it wasn't really relevant, anyway. Until it suddenly was...
Personality: Gabriel is implied to have started out much like his counterpart in the main Miraculous universe; a man deeply in love with his wife, who was willing to go to almost any lengths and take great risks to accomplish his goals. However, while the Gabriel of the main universe remained on that path, falling ever deeper into despair, desperation, and darkness after Emilie's death, for this version of Gabriel, her death was a turning point. Seeing what his reckless actions and misuse of power had cost him, he resolved to not just become a better man, but also to work to change the world by giving others hope and inspiring them to be better people too.
Gabriel does share some personality traits with his main universe counterpart; they are iterations of the same man, after all. But there are a great many differences as well. He's creative and artistic, but relatively reserved in his civilian form, if not quite to the same degree as main universe Gabriel. He's more relaxed overall than his stiff, controlling counterpart, and his outfit reflects that; he's still put together, but with a softer hairdo and round glasses, and wears softer colors compared to normal Gabriel's crisp red and white and later solid white. He smiles more and might even crack the occasional joke (though the quality of said jokes is debatable), as opposed to his main universe counterpart who seldom smiled sincerely.
And where main universe Gabriel tried to control his son's every move and behaved increasingly coldly to him after Emilie's death, there's none of that coldness or controlling behavior this in Gabriel. While his version of Adrien was also apparently homeschooled, if he'd expressed the desire to go to a normal school, it's likely Gabriel would have agreed. He loves his son dearly wan wants what's best for him. Where main universe Gabriel tried to keep Ardien isolated except from the people he wanted his son associating with, to the point of trying force an eventual arranged marriage on him, this Gabriel would be thrilled that his son has friends his own age and encourage the relationships within reason. The fact that his relationship with his son has become strained due to the time consuming nature of leading a double life pains him deeply, though he knows that keeping Adrien out of the loop is the only way to keep him safe from the Supreme's wrath if he were ever caught.
As Betterfly, he's at once more formal and more openly emotional. Betterfly rarely uses much if any slang and refers to people by their full names if he knows both their first and last names. His position as a leader in the resistance movement against the Supreme means that he needs to maintain a level of professionalism when working alongside his various allies. But his superhero identity also allows him to express more freely how deeply he cares about people in general and how much his dream of a better world means to him. Once he has a moment to breathe after arriving in the main Miraculous universe in the special, he actually momentarily falls to one knee and sobs at the beauty of a world where people help and care about each other- the type of world he'd dreamed about despite thinking it might just be a utopian fantasy- brought to life.
And while in the main universe Hawkmoth (later calling himself both Shadowmoth and Monarch) used his powers to prey on people's negative emotions and transform them into villains, usually against their will, Betterfly only ever uses his powers to empower those who are willing. Unless it's a life or death scenario, he also makes certain to get their express consent before doing so, and explain to them the risks involved. Honestly, he's better about getting consent and explaining things than main universe Master Fu was. He wants to inspire hope in people, to help them change and become better people themselves, as he did, not to impose his own will on them.
Nooroo's base personality is similar to that of his main universe counterpart. He's knowledgeable, helpful, and empathetic, but can sometimes be too trusting at first. He's also among the more formal of the kwamis. Ordinarily he's call his holder 'Master' in a similar manner to Wayzz, but due to the circumstances of their universe, Gabriel discourages that; given the fact that Nooroo was only freed from the Supreme's control relatively recently and the other kwamis are still enslaved, the word carries too many unfortunate implications for his liking. Nooroo may occasionally slip back into it in stressful situations though, out of force of habit.
Nooroo is also hopeful. While in the main universe he's shown to never give up hope that he'll be rescued from Hawkmoth's control, this incarnation of Nooroo never give up hope that the rest of his fellow Kwamis can be rescued from the Supreme's control. And unlike certain other kwamis that shall remain nameless (cough-Plagg-cough), Nooroo is also the responsible sort. He tries to give his holder good advice and make sure they take care of themselves. Main universe Gabriel nearly always ignored Nooroo's advice or told him to shut up (because as should be pretty clear by now, on top of being a villain, main universe Gabriel was also generally a jerk), this incarnation of Gabriel actually listens to his kwami, and given the stresses of leading a double life, reminders to take care of himself are occasionally needed.
And like his main universe counterpart, Nooroo is also beginning to take on some of his holder's personality traits. Though unlike main universe Nooroo, who seemed to be picking up His holder's recklessness, this version of Nooroo is becoming a bit more thoughtful and artistic, enjoying hanging out in Gabriel's breast pocket and watching while he works on new designs.
Abilities & Inventory: Nooroo's inventory is easy: Nothing. Kwamis travel light.
Gabriel's Inventory:
-His civilian clothes (a peach collar shirt, blue vest, darker blue ascot tie with a pattern of triangles in the same shade of blue as the vest, tan slacks, white socks, and white dress shoes with laces)
-His round glasses
-The Butterfly Miraculous (with accompanying Nooroo, worn concealed under his ascot)
-His cell phone
-His watch
-His wedding ring
-His wallet (contains his ID, several credit cards, a few paper bills of middling to large denominations, and a copy of a receipt for a grocery delivery to the Agreste mansion, dated several weeks before his pull point)
In civilian form, Gabriel seems like just a normal human. He's healthy and in fairly good shape, but not unusually strong or athletic. He does have that ever so helpful super power called being incredibly rich, though that won't really matter much in Reverein. He's also a head of a highly successful fashion brand. Not only can he handle the creative side, taking designs all the way from initial sketches to finished outfits and all steps in between, he's also skilled in the business side of things, brokering deals, handling suppliers, meeting with clients, and all the other things the head of a company needs to do.
But while on the surface he seems to be just a normalrich man, with a normal life, that's only half the story. Because he has a secret. Namely the fact that he's secretly the superhero Betterfly. Using the Butterfly Miraculous, Gabriel can transform into his superhero identity by saying "Light wings, rise!", and similarly return to civilian form by saying "Light wings, fall."
Whether in civilian or superhero form, the Butterfly Miraculous gives him the ability to sense the emotions of other people within a certain radius. Thankfully for him- since that radius encompasses an area roughly equivalent to the entire city of Paris and at least a kilometer or two of airspace above it- this passive ability doesn't pick up on all emotions all the time, only strong emotional spikes; the stronger the emotional spike and the closer its source, the easier it is to detect. As Betterfly, this passive ability is enhanced, allowing him to home in on and identify the source of the emotional spikes more easily, or even actively seek out the types of emotions he's looking for by focusing his senses if he so chooses.
His superhero form comes with all the abilities that seem to come standard for all Miraculous wielders: superhuman strength, speed, durability, agility, and athleticism. Racing over rooftops and leaping from building to building while carrying a teenage girl to safety? No problem! Surviving an enemy kicking a minivan into you, leaving you pinned between it and a steel structure, then pushing said minivan away and continuing the fight? Totally doable! You get the picture.
But Betterfly's main superpower is kamikotization, that is, the ability to temporarily grant superpowers and superhero forms to others. Unlike his main universe counterpart who seemingly breeds entire populations of butterflies in his secret lair for his use as akumas (the evil counterpart to kamikos), Betterfly seems to rely on a single white butterfly at a time. It's unlikely that this butterfly is entirely ordinary, as when not in use, it rests in a small compartment in the head of Betterfly's cane. To kamikiotize someone, Betterfly takes the butterfly in his hands, infusing it with magical power, and changing it into a kamiko; in this state, its color changes from white to dark purple with some glowing bits in a bright shade of purple. The kamiko is then released and flies to the recipient where it lands on and merges with an object. Based on examples from the main Miraculous universe, the object is usually on the person of the recipient, but it doesn't necessarily have to be. Before the transformation fully takes hold the object turns black, but after the person fully accepts the kamikotization, dark purple energy swashed over them and the emerge in their new superhero form, complete with superhero name, costume, powers, and an innate knowledge of how to use said powers.
While the person is kamikotized, they share a type of telepathic link with Betterfly. It doesn't let them read each other's thoughts, but it does allow him to sense what the kamikotized person is seeing, hearing, and doing and communicate with them so long as they're within the Butterfly Miraculous' range. Usually this is done by both parties speaking aloud and the connection simply transmitting the words, but direct mind-to-mind communication is also possible. Betterfly can reverse the kamikotization at any time, returning the other person to normal, or- with a great effort of will- it's possible for the person to break out of it themselves, and it can be ended by someone else if the object into which the kamiko merged is destroyed. Though really, given that this is Betterfly and not his villainous main universe counterpart we're talking about, probably all the kamikotized person would really have to do would be to ask nicely if they wanted to be returned to normal.
Nooroo also presumably has the ability to kamikotize people on his own, but kwamis aren't supposed to use their powers without the help of a wielder, and with good reason. It's not because they're not strong enough; quite the opposite in fact. It's because if they use their powers on their own, those powers tend to go out of control and have unpredictable- sometimes disastrous- consequences. Nooroo has never been seen to use his powers on his own in canon, so it's unknown what the results would be. Needless to say, Nooroo would avoid doing so if he possibly could, but due to the lack of canon on this one it may be best if his ability to use his power without a wielder is nerfed or just plain removed entirely for his time in Reveirin.
Between sessions of Betterfly being transformed, Nooroo has to eat to recharge his vital energy. While any food will do the job in a pinch, his favorite and the one that works best for him is honey, which will make it interesting when he and Gabriel discover Dream Honey. While Gabriel, as an adult, isn't forced to transform back after a set period of time, excessive use of Miraculous powers such as using multiple Miraculous at once (not likely to be an issue currently in game, if ever) or staying transformed and using one's powers for extended periods of time (as in like, a day or more without rest) can be detrimental to the health of both the wielder and the kwami.
Once he discovers Dreamotion energy, Gabriel's most likely way to use it would be to try and enhance his empathic abilities while in civilian form. Discreetly, mind you; he does have a secret identity to think about. He might also try to incorporate it into his fashion designing, such as creating clothing that changes color with a person's mood or something similar.
Suitability & Plans: Mostly the reason I want to play him here is because I'd like to play him in an environment that not only lets him see the kind of beautiful world he dreams of but also provides opportunities for me to play around with his super power of turning other people into temporary superheroes. If accepted, I'll put up a little request/permissions post for that so anybody who wants their characters opted out of potential kamikotization or has particular preferences for superhero names/costumes/power sets for their character can let me know. If a person hasn't filled out the form but kamikotiztion is likely for their character in the near future, I'll contact them privately to see what they want to do.
As for how he'll get on, while Gabriel isn't exactly a social butterfly (pun intended), he has no problems interacting with people. And while he'll definitely be interacting with Adrien, he shouldn't have any trouble finding cross canon CR.
